Water and Space Exploration

Water is the essence of life, that sustains all forms of existence on our planet. It nurtures, hydrates, and facilitates essential biological processes making it vital to every living being. From quenching our thirst to domestic use, food production and recreational purposes. In space habitats, water is also a critical aspect for sustaining life, and necessary for multi-generational success, re-creating and sustaining Earth-like environments. Systems onboard spacecraft and space habitats capture, purify, and reuse as much water as possible. This closed-loop approach ensures every drop counts, supporting life, agriculture, and space systems.

Astronauts and residents of space habitats need a reliable source of clean water for drinking and staying hydrated. Maintaining proper hydration is crucial for the overall health and well-being of space explorers. It is also essential for sanitation purposes to ensure a clean and healthy living environment. Water is vital for cultivating plants, acting as a nutrient carrier for growing food in space, to support the photosynthesis process in agriculture and yielding fresh produce for space communities.

Water can also be a source of oxygen and fuel. Through, electrolysis, water molecules (H2O) can be split into hydrogen and oxygen, enabling space communities to breath and power life-support systems. Water is also an effective medium for thermal regulation in space habitats, used in cooling systems to dissipate excess heat generated by equipment and space systems.

Efficient temperature control ensures space systems can maintain the optimal functionality throughout their lifecycle. Water also has radiation-absorbing properties, and it can be incorporated into the structures of space architecture and used as a protective shielding against sources of radiation in space, which serves as one of the biggest hinderances to long-term habitation in space.

As we reach for the stars, understanding and harnessing water’s roles are key to living and working in space. Scientists have detected water molecules in various corners of our solar system and beyond! From icy moons like Europa and Enceladus to distant exoplanets, the building blocks of life are scattered across the universe to sustain life beyond the boundaries of our planet.
